Considering all the choices of materials available to the modern cook, nonstick cookware sets are by far the most popular. In reality, nonstick is nothing more than a special coating that can be added to any material. You will find nonstick finishes on stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum.

The main purpose of nonstick cookware is to prevent food from sticking to the inside surface during the cooking process. This special coating comes most often in the form of Teflon (PTFE) although in recent times, other materials have been developed. including the so called “green” nonstick.

Non stick pots and pans are a wonderful choice low fat cooking, stir frys, fried eggs, omelets, crepes and pancakes. On the downside, the nonstick coating will eventually wear out, scratch, or becomes ineffective. They really do not last forever.

If you are planning to buy a nonstick cookware set, make sure is made from thick gauge aluminum which is both a good heat conductor and it will not warp. Stay away from thin pans since they will often warp when headed, and the nonstick finish will wear out fast. (see our video)

What we like:

  • Good for low fat cooking
  • Food does not stick
  • Easy to clean
  • Low to medium heat cooking (saves energy)
  • A must have for eggs, omelets and pancakes
  • Great for stirfrys
  • Easy to clean

What we don’t like:

  • Food doesn’t stick resulting in inferior pan gravies
  • Dark inside; hard to see food
  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Scratches easily
  • Potentially harmful to pet birds if overheated (fumes not harmful to humans)

MY ADVICE:

Buy a nonstick cookware set if you need to cook with very low fat. Otherwise, just have one or two nonstick skillets and one 2 qt saucepan.

Recommended:

BEST: All Clad Nonstick 8″ Skillet

All-Clad cookware is crafted from 3 permanently bonded (clad) layers of metal -This  pan is designed so that heat spreads quickly and evenly to produce superior results so very little heat needs to be applied to produce superb results.

High heat is number one enemy of nonstick surfaces. This pan’s great conductivity will allow you to apply less heat to the pan thus increasing the life span of the nonstick coating.

Not only that, the evenness of the heat will cook omelets, crepes and pancakes to perfection without a lot of fat.

If you can afford it, this is the pan for you .
